Tiruppavai 05 Damodara
Andal celebrates Krishna as the lord of Maya. Krishna, Narasimha or Vamana - his appearance on earth is always a mystery. Mayavi! In the ‘Damodara’ Leela, he allows himself to be bound by Yashoda to a mortar. Merciful Mayavi. Andal asserts that by merely reciting his name and thinking of him, sins accumulated over time will be burnt to dust.

The monkey represents the mind. The orangutan means the wise man of the forest. Doesn’t have a tail. Very human. Wise. The saffron coat represents renunciation. All that the fickle mind needed to stabilise itself, was something to cling to. It found Krishna. The orangutan is Krishnapremi.

Krishnapremi
Krishnapremi: The orangutan means the wise man of the forest. It has an orange coat suggesting renunciation. Here he is used as a symbol of detachment and surrender to God. So he is Krishnapremi.
Surrender: Krishnapremi surrenders to Krishna. The peacock feathers represent the leaves of a tree (at the top half). Water from the root reaches the leaves keeping them "attached" to the tree. When the water dries, the leaves are shed signifying detachment shown as brown leaves (at the bottom half) of the painting.
