Lakshmi signifies prosperity. She represents the water element.
Lakshmi emerges out of the lotus, during the churning of the ocean of milk. Her grace flows and sustains the cycle of nature (waterbody, represented by lotus and fish; land, with trees and grains and rain clouds with lightning). She nourishes all living beings with her abundance.
She is the lightening (Srivatsa) on the dark cloud called Vishnu, whom she chooses as her consort.
